About the brand

Akubra is an Australian hat manufacturer. The company is associated with bush hats made of rabbit fur felt with wide brims that are worn in rural Australia.

In 1874 Benjamin Dunkerley arrived in Tasmania from England and decided to start a hat making business in Hobart. His skills as a hatter were backed by his ability to invent machinery, and soon after his arrival he had developed a mechanical method of removing the hair tip from rabbit fur so the under-fur could be used in felt hat making. Previously this task had to be done by hand.

By 2015 Akubra has produced two million hats for the military.

Akubra Hats are still proudly Australian made in Kempsey.

Distinctive and demands compliment

I just sat down in the cancer waiting room when I spotted the distinctive look of an Akubra (Lawson) across the way... I had to go and tell the gent how I admired his hat... I had just received my Banjo Paterson and I love it... The look, the fit and colour and the tune Waltzing Matilda whenever I wear it.

Delivery was right on time if not sooner that I had expected.

It doesn’t get any better... I think it’s amazing that the Akubra can be spotted in a crowd !!!

First hat great service

Just received my first Akubra "Banjo Paterson".. Shipping was spot on at 7 days to Chicago, great service. Love the style and color and can't wait to take it out in public and the fit was perfect as well. I will be buying another Akubra soon...

Best Hat I own. And I got a few.

Akbar hats seem always to beloved by their owners, and I'm proving no exception to the rule. My measurement and previous hat size (7 1/4) corresponded to a size 58 Banjo Paterson, and that proved to be exactly right. I've received numerous compliments on it, and I very much enjoy wearing it. My hat came from Delmonico Hatters in New Haven, and it was very well packaged and arrived in perfect condition. The hat matched exactly my expectations and hopes. The felt is smooth, even, and sturdy. The crown is well-shaped and lined appropriately. The various details speak of high quality. I have no complaints or even quibbles. I love my hat. Don't mess with it.

I've worn Akubras for decades as they have become part of my persona....friends almost don't recognize me w/o my hat.....and 'had' to buy a second new one within a years time from AustralianGear. My other ones have kinda pooped out since the 80s and so I bought a Coober Pedi hat last fall. I was so pleased with that one that I splurged and got this one which is very similar to the one being replaced. It is of fine quality, fits well, and had a great price. It took three weeks to arrive and the package was roughed up some, but the hat was ok. I might suggest that the feathers pictured with the hat on the website be noted as not included. Feathers aren't needed for me, but some people could be disheartened. Also, I really love the fact that they do include a set of foam spacers with the hat. I am a very pleased customer. Many people comment on these two hats of mine as the hats protect my head, block the sun, and look great.

I ordered this by mistake….

But I'm keeping it because it's a really nice hat. Fit is absolutely perfect within millimeters, and it looks good over a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers without appearing weird. I meant to order the Cattleman in Fawn (no idea how I screwed that up) and Australiangear was nice enough to give me a discount on my second hat because of my mistake.

It's not a summer hat, as it is heavily lined and not ventilated, which is my only problem with it right now. Can't wait to start wearing it out this fall/winter.
